What Happens At A Disability Appeal Hearing?

HOW SOCIAL SECURITY DECIDES IF YOU ARE DISABLED IN LA

The appeals hearing is a critical part of your appeals process. The Social Security Administration gives you the chance to ask for a hearing before an administrative law judge. This judge will have had no role to play in the original decision made in your case, or even in the reconsideration stage of your case.

The hearing will be held within a distance of 35 miles from your home, and you’ll be informed about the time and place that you must arrive for the hearing. In some situations, it is possible to hold the hearing by videoconference. Speak to your attorney, and discuss if this is possible in your case. One major benefit with a videoconferencing hearing is that you may get a date for a hearing much quicker than a formal in-person appearance.

It is highly recommended that you attend the hearing either in person, or via videoconferencing. It is also recommended that you attend the hearing with your Los Angeles Social Security disability benefits lawyer.

If it is not possible for you to attend the hearing in person or via videoconferencing on the time and date that is scheduled in your case, then you must inform the agency in advance, and provide reasons for why you are unable to attend. You may be able to request the Social Security Administration for a change in the time or location of the hearing. This is only allowed in certain cases, and if your circumstances do require a change of location or time.
